Kieran Barry
Service Delivery Officer
Getting drivers and vehicles in the right place at the right
time - that's the basis of my job. I used to be a driver myself, so
I know how everything works. Except that now I'm part of a team
that's responsible for the whole rota not just one coach.
I look after the driver rotas, planning 10 days in advance to
ensure all the journeys are covered correctly. I have to manage
resources to ensure the peaks and the troughs of customer numbers
are handled properly. What I do covers the legal side too - there
are drivers' hours regulations where drivers aren't allowed to work
over a certain number of hours in a given period. It's down to me
to make sure every driver is within their limits.
When I was a driver I covered routes right across the south of
England - Heathrow, Gatwick, Oxford, Cambridge, Norwich and, of
course, London. This knowledge is vital with my current job, as is
the Certificate in Management I studied for over 13 months not long
ago.
What I like best about being a Service Delivery Officer is the
wide variety of responsibilities. I'm a trained First Aider and
Fire Warden too for instance. I also like the fact that the
organisation develops from within - that helps make the place more
efficient as far as I'm concerned, and it also tells people that if
they are hard working and ambitious, they can really go places.
